Supporting the redevelopment of Gatwick Airport Station through a complex rail construction programme delivered within one of the UK’s busiest transport environments.

Working with VolkerFitzpatrick on behalf of Network Rail, JBA supported the delivery of a major station upgrade that included a new Platform 7, expanded passenger circulation, track and signalling modifications, accessibility improvements, and extensive infrastructure works. The project was completed while maintaining normal station and airport operations.

Project Description - Expanding Capacity at a Critical Airport Rail Gateway

Gatwick Airport Station plays a vital role in connecting passengers to one of the UK’s busiest international airports.

The redevelopment programme was designed to increase capacity, improve passenger movement, and provide the infrastructure needed to support longer trains and future demand.

The works included the construction of Platform 7 and a new passenger circulation hub, modifications to track and signalling, new escalators and lifts serving Platforms 5 and 6, resurfacing of platforms and footbridges, and refurbishment of the main concourse.

The programme also delivered a 12-car platform, approximately 1,000 metres of new track, 10 deep under-track crossings, and upgrades to signalling transformers.

Construction began in autumn 2012, with the redeveloped station opening on 3 February 2014.

The Challenge - Delivering Major Infrastructure Works in a Live Station and Airport Environment

The primary challenge was delivering extensive construction and railway engineering work without disrupting normal passenger operations at the station or the airport.

The programme involved multiple technical disciplines working within a constrained and heavily used environment.

Track alterations, signalling modifications, deep under-track crossings, accessibility improvements, platform construction, and concourse refurbishment all had to be carefully coordinated around existing services.

Maintaining safe passenger movement and reliable railway operations throughout the works was essential.

JBA's Approach

Integrated Programme Coordination

JBA supported coordination across civil engineering, railway systems, station works, and passenger-interface activities. This helped keep individual workstreams aligned and ensured dependencies were visible throughout the programme.

Live Operational Planning

The project required detailed planning around an operational railway station and international airport. JBA helped support delivery sequencing and coordination so construction activity could progress while protecting normal passenger and rail operations.

Engineering & Infrastructure Integration

The programme combined track works, signalling, accessibility upgrades, structural works, passenger facilities, and deep under-track infrastructure. JBA supported the management of these interfaces to help reduce disruption and maintain overall programme control.

Results & Impact - Increased Capacity With Business-as-Usual Operations Maintained

The £40 million Gatwick Airport Station redevelopment successfully delivered major improvements to passenger capacity, accessibility, and rail infrastructure.

The completed scheme included a new Platform 7, a passenger circulation hub, a 12-car platform, approximately 1,000 metres of new track, upgraded signalling infrastructure, escalators and lifts, refurbished passenger areas, and extensive under-track engineering works.

Most importantly, the programme was delivered without disrupting normal station or airport operations, demonstrating the value of disciplined planning and coordination within a highly constrained live environment.
